Temporary Parent Visa (Subclass 870)
If you would like to bring your parent to Australia, the sponsored parent visa could be for you. This is only a temporary visa that allows your parents to remain in Aus for a temporary period of time. Unlike the permanent parent visas such as the Parent or Aged Parent visa applications, you do not need to pass the balance of family test. In addition to this the application process is much quicker. This application is done in a 2 step process. Step 1 – the Australian citizen/Resident child must first apply for and be approved as a Parent Sponsor. Step 2 – Once the Parent Sponsor Application has been approved, you would then have 6 months to apply for this Sponsored Parent Visa.
Step 1 – Applying for Parent Sponsorship:
Before the parent can apply for sponsored parent visa application, the child must first make an application and have the application approved as a parent sponsor. Please note, there are numerous requirements that the sponsor must meet. The parent sponsor application is lodged online. On the application, the sponsor must agree and commit to:
- provide financial support and accommodation for the sponsored parent while they are in Australia and pay back all outstanding public health debts incurred by the sponsored parent in Australia.
Sponsor Eligibility Requirements: To be eligible as a Parent Sponsor, you must be at least 18 years of age and be the child of the prospective visa applicant. You must also be:
- an Australian citizen, or
- an Australian permanent resident usually resident in Australia for at least 4 years
Additional Sponsor Requirements:
- You must have met and complied with any previous sponsorship obligations
- If you owe the Australian Government money, you must have paid it back or arranged to pay it back.
- Meet Character Requirements
Pass the Income Test: Sponsors for this visa must be able to pass an income test. This is to ensure you can cover any expenses of the parent in Australia (if needed). To pass the income test, the sponsor’s taxable income for the most recent completed year prior to the date of lodgement must be at least AUD83,454.80. If you can’t pass the income test yourself, you can combine your taxable income with your partner who is an Australian citizen, Australian permanent resident or eligible New Zealand citizen. If combining income, your taxable income must be at least 50 per cent of the taxable income amount specified to pass the income test. Parental Sponsorship Cost:

Step 2 – Application for Sponsored Parent Visa
Once the sponsorship has been approved, your parent can then lodge the Sponsored Parent Visa (Subclass 870) application online. The application for the Sponsored Parent Visa must be made within 6 months of the sponsorship approval (if lodging from offshore), or 60 days of sponsorship approval (if lodging from onshore). Duration: The Sponsored Parent Visa can initially be granted for either 3 or 5 years. The visa will also be multiple entry (meaning your parent can enter and exit Australia as much as they want during this period). Length of stay in Australia: Your parent can remain in Australia for the duration of the visa (3 – 5 years). They will not need to leave Australia during this time. Your parent can then also choose to re-apply for further visas to stay a maximum of 10 years (in total) in Australia. Cost: The cost for the visa varies depending on the duration:
- 3 years – $5090
- 5 years – $10180
