Sporting Activities Visa – Subclass 408 Temporary Activities Visa.
This visa allows you to play, coach, instruct or adjudicate for an Australian team, or with high level sports training in a sporting organization. You and your family can stay in Australia for up to 2 years and can be paid by the sporting club or program that sponsors you.
This visa is much simpler compared to traditional employer-sponsored visas. We recently used this visa to bring over a Samoan rugby player to play in the national Rugby competition for the season.
What is Required:
Approved Sponsor:
You must have an approved sponsoring entity. This means the sporting company must make a separate sponsorship application to immigration. The sponsor must be an approved Australian organization or government agency that administers or promotes sports or sporting events.
Sporting Pedigree:
You must have an established reputation in your sporting field if you apply as:
- an elite player
- a coach
- an instructor
- an adjudicator
You must be endorsed by an Australian national sporting body as being able to play, coach, instruct or adjudicate the sport at a national level. For example: in Rugby Union, you must be endorsed by Rugby Australia.
Formal Agreement:
You must have a suitable formal agreement with your sporting club or sporting organization in Australia.
The agreement can pay the applicant. Or can cover expenses such as flights, accommodation, stipend, food, insurance etc. Additionally, the applicant must be able to have access to enough money during their stay in Australia to support themselves and any dependent family members who accompany.
