From Malaysia
Ooi is a student from Malaysia who moved to Australia when he was 18 to study Commercial Cookery on The Gold Coast. He moved to Surfers Paradise on The Gold Coast and studied for 2 years. He studied the certificate III and IV in Commercial Cookery and Diploma of Hospitality. Throughout his studies Ooi undertook over 360 hours of work experience as a cook in a local restaurant. This combined with his qualifications allowed him to apply for the temporary graduate work visa (Subclass 485). This is an 18 month work visa in Aus.
Whilst on the graduate work visa Ooi, was able to work in the industry for 1 year as a chef and was able to obtain a full skill assessment through the Job Ready Program. Ooi did not have sufficient points to apply for Skilled Independent Visa, however PTA assisted Ooi with this full skill assessment to apply for a Skilled Work Regional Visa – Subclass 491. He is now very close to his dream of permanent residency in Aus.
